We are happy to introduce a band from our very own state named The Orphan, The Poet. They are an unsigned 4-piece alternative rock band from Dayton, Ohio. They started 2014 off with “Starlight” and released another new single “Better Than This” just a few weeks ago. Their last EP, An Exercise In Form, was acoustic and came out in 2012. All of The Orphan, the Poet’s music can be found on their bandcamp (link below). The band also has a great sense of humor which is why fans find them so approachable. As a result, they are constantly answering questions on social media and creating inside jokes on tours. They just finished headlining a tour earlier this month so I caught up with them and asked them to fill in the blanks.
Our names are…. David Eselgroth (vocals/guitar), Ty Bush (guitar), Jake Floyd (bass), Drew Ihle (drums)
The pickiest eater in the band is….Probably David. Not that he doesn’t like a lot of things, but he’s doing the Paleo diet so he just tries to avoid a lot of foods.
The most OCD member is….Ty as far as cleanliness goes. He’s always the first one trying to keep the van from turning into a toxic waste dump on tour.
We knew we’d become a band when….We all just kept showing up to practice.
For fun we like to….Fun on tour usually consists of making up elaborate inside jokes that go on for way too long that no one other than us will ever find humorous or thinking of ways to scare Drew…mostly scaring Drew.
The first song we wrote was…. ‘Kingdom’ off our first EP. Gladly, we’ve come a long way since then!
Our sound is best described as….We usually describe our sound “the best music ever played” or “alternative rock.”
One thing we want you to remember while listening to our music is….We will probably challenge you to a game of ping pong if we both ever find ourselves in a facility equiped with such gaming aparatus and nothing on our itinerary for the next 10-15 minutes.
If we play another band’s music it’s….Most definitely be ‘The Reason’ by Hoobastank. Always and forever.
Our craziest or most memorable gig was….I’d have to say the craziest was the time that we played a show in a taco shop in Las Vegas and before the show, Drew cauterized Ty’s leg in the parking lot…It was a pretty solid show.
The furthest we’ve ever traveled for a gig is….The longest drive we have had was probably for the first date of the Dance Gavin Dance tour. The tour started in California so we had to make the trek out from Ohio. It was a long haul.
Our largest audience was….One of the largest shows we’ve played was in Sacramento at Ace of Spades. That town knows how to get down.
The best part about headlining our last tour with Artifex Pereo was….Well the worst part of touring with Artifex Pereo was having to play after them every night haha. That band shreds so hard! But the best part of that tour was getting to bring out a band that we’d been fans of for so long. We love Artifex.
We’re currently listening to….We’re currently jamming everything from The 1975 to Mayday Parade to Phinehas in our van. We like to keep a good mix going.
This fall, you should expect us….To come through your town!
