Interview – Crash Midnight

Danielle and I got a chance to see Crash Midnight perform at the Cleveland House of Blues last month with The Pretty Reckless and Adelitas Way. The band was started by members Shaun Soho (vocals), Bo (bass), Alex Donaldson (guitar). They’re a crazed, five-piece rock n’ roll band out of Boston. At the show, they performed an impressive set that got the crowd wired and rocked our faces off. My favorites included “Welcome to Boston” and their single “151.” Fans of Guns ‘N’ Roses and Aerosmith should be excited about their new record, Lost In The City, that was just released this month. The album came out on the 18th of November so be sure check it out. In the meantime, learn more about the band from their fill in the blank responses below.

The meaning behind our name Crash Midnight and why we chose it is….

SOHO: I don’t know how much we chose it.  It was more like the name chose us …or chose Bo …or just Bo makes poor decisions frequently.

BO: I accidentally went off the road around midnight. 4:45 is around midnight right? Close enough!

We met each other….

SOHO: We met each other because fate has a weird sense of humor.

DONALDSON: Yeah, I just kind of rolled with it.  (Pun intended?)

SOHO: Bo and I were playing in and around the Boston music scene and had decided to start a new thing.  Alex had posted his picture in the personals under the heading of “Guitarist Seeking To Make A String Of Progressively Worse And Worse Life Decisions.”

The pickiest eater in the band is….

SOHO: It’s definitely not Alex.

DONALDSON: I would say Shaun.

BO: well when you’ve been on the road for 19 hours from North Dakota to Utah with nothing but gas station food then nobody’s a picky eater.

The most OCD member is….

SOHO: It’s definitely Alex.

BO: It’s definitely Alex

DONALDSON: Probably me.  But I think there is a lot more going on than just OCD.

For fun we like to….

SOHO: Make everyone’s life around us as chaotic as possible?

DONALDSON: Have a good time, all of the time.

BO: Do the same thing we do every night. Try to take over the world.

SOHO: Really, Bo?

Our musical influences include….

SOHO: Johnny Depp meets Californication’s Hank Moody.

DONALDSON: Punk rock music.  Blues Music.  Rock and roll music.  And Hall and Oates.

BO: Yuck. Not that. Dethklock …but like the Blues episode where they have cinderblocks tied to their hands.

We find inspiration from….

SOHO: A bottle, frequently.

BO: That.

DONALDSON:  **REDACTED**

We’re currently listening to….

SOHO: Rolling Stones, Warren Zevon, and Leonard Cohen …and ourselves talking …a lot.

DONALDSON: The Pretty Reckless album is fantastic.  And probably our own album as well.

Our craziest or most memorable gig was….

SOHO: Minot, ND. We partied in the girl’s bathroom and the manager made us take tequila shots all night. Actually, that’s pretty similar to our last show in NYC where the guys in Adelitas Way were giving us shots after every song we played on stage, but the addition of the girl’s room narrowly edges it out.

BO: Hell yeah, Minot was so memorable I completely forget almost everything about it. That’s a compliment.

DONALDSON: I loved Canada.  I have a weakness for French accents.

If we play another band’s music it’s….

SOHO: probably featuring Michael McDonald

BO: PEEEEEGG!!

DONALDSON: Hall and Oates.

SOHO: Alex is full of shit.  It’s totally Go West’s “King Of Wishful Thinking” on repeat.

Lost In The City was recorded in….

SOHO: spite of our best efforts to the contrary.

DONALDSON: Record time.

One thing we want you to remember while listening to our music is….

SOHO: How cool Alex’s solos are.  And also that he’d like you to bring him a beer on stage.  We’ve had serious band meetings where he is adamant that I mention this between all songs.

DONALDSON: How cool my solos are.

Something odd our fans should know about us is….

SOHO: Bo’s last name is not “Soho”

DONALDSON: We are not as cool as we think we are.

Our last meals would be….

SOHO: Liquid and strong.

DONALDSON: At Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square, Boston.

In the next six months you should expect….

SOHO: To re-up your car insurance if you see your town on our tour routing.
