Three words I’d use to describe myself are….Hella turnt up.
My favorite season is….Summer. Easily. I’m trying to move somewhere where it is perpetually summer.
The first song I wrote was….That’s a tough one. It’s hard to pinpoint a first. I have notebooks filled with songs from my early teens. Suffice it to say that it’s for the best if no one ever discovers that song, whatever it may be.
I find inspiration from….People who are the best at what they do, or who are at least innovative and interesting. I like the idea of pushing oneself to one’s limits, and I’m inspired by people who live at the very edge of their physical, mental and emotional capacity.
Something I hope to accomplish as a musician is….I just want to put out a record I can thoroughly enjoy. Also, putting out a record via Merge would be a dream come true. One of my favorite labels of all time.
My favorite songs of all time include….I can’t narrow it down, but a few stand outs are
- The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make”
- Big L – “Put It On”
- Pete Rock & CL Smooth – “They Reminisce Over You”
- Loretta Lynn – “Success”
- Negative Approach – “Nothing”
- Superchunk – “Hyper Enough” and actually, I probably just need to stop there or I’ll go on forever. I really love music.
My favorite tracks to play live are….If I’m playing acoustic, I really love playing covers. “Magnet’s Coil” by Sebadoh is a favorite. If we’re talking full band, my favorite song to play is probably “On The Subject of Serotonin.” Honestly, I wish the entirety of my last record had taken more cues from that track.
I’m currently listening to….I’ve been jamming the new Turnover tracks today. They’re so good. The newest Death Injection LP has also been getting a lot of play. It’s a real mosher.
For fun I like to….Skateboard and stage dive. Pretty much all the cliche shit you expect of a hardcore kid. I like being with my friends, my girlfriend, watching bands and generally wil’n out. I dig being alone and reading comics/watching movies, too. Nerd stuff. I’m bipolar, so it really depends on the day. Or the minute.
Forget I Brought It Up was recorded in….Sumner, WA with my homie Ben Barnett of Kind of Like Spitting, and engineered by Pierre Ferguson at Rehearsal Works Studios. We did that ish straight to tape, old school status, ya feel?
One thing I want you to remember while listening to my music is….That it’s 2015 and I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. Most of the good ideas have been had already, especially within the arts. This isn’t a new format. Don’t take it too seriously, and just let the riffs move your head. That’s all I ask.
Something odd I want my fans to know about me is….I’m a crazy dude. Like, straight up, I have a mental illness. That being said, I’m mad sorry if I seem stand offish ever. It’s quite literally just my brain chemistry being weird. I appreciate each and every person who takes the time to come out and see me play, and I love getting the opportunity to kick it with y’all, as long as my nugget isn’t acting whack.
My last meal would be….I’m a vegan and I fully encourage everyone to be, but I’ve said in the past that if I knew I had a couple days to live, I would just go ham on Kraft macaroni and barbecue ribs. At that point, it’s kinda like, “f*** it.”
I’m absolutely terrified of….The ocean, space, death and other generally unfathomable and expansive concepts/spaces. I like things that I can understand and/or fight against if need be. A lion is scary, but I can run from it and punch it. A shark that can sneak up on me and drag me into a blackened abyss? Nah, man. I ain’t feeling that. Also, I don’t really vibe with bugs too hard.
In the next six months you should expect….To see me at Warped Tour, and then doing some dope stuff afterwards that I can’t announce yet.
