Interview – Michael McQuaid

The following fill in the blanks come from Nashville-based solo artist, Michael McQuaid. Growing up in Texas, McQuaid started writing and playing in different bands but soon realized he wanted to pursue music under his own name. His pop, soul, and rock influences really came to life on his 2014 debut EP, Heart&Soul. For the record, McQuaid traveled to Hollywood to work with producer Ethan Kauffman at The Elephant in the Room. The record consists of 6 tracks and my two favorites are “Tender Soul” and “Sleepwalking.” Be sure to check out Heart&Soul and the music video for his new single “Jane Doe” below.

Three words I’d use to describe myself are….hardworking, loyal, and genuine.

My favorite season is….summer!

I knew I wanted to pursue music when….I was a little kid and I was mesmerized by my dad playing guitar.

The first song I wrote was….in an acoustic power pop project I had when I was 13 called “Darling, Let’s Dance.” (embarrassing)

I find inspiration from….classic soul records like Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. My mom and my dad inspire me so much.

Something I hope to accomplish as a musician is….becoming successful and being able to do this for the rest of my life. And changing someone’s life with a song I write.

My favorite songs of all time include….

  • “Dear Prudence” by the Beatles
  • “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding
  • “Little Martha” by the Allman Brothers (my dad plays this for my mom all the time)

I’m currently listening to….

  • Bioux 22- Elijah Blake
  • Mr. Excitement- Jackie Wilson
  • Non-Fiction- Ne-Yo
  • Cloud 19- Kehlani

For fun I like to….watch movies and play with my kitten!

Something I learned from creating Heart&Soul is….marketing and promotion is everything!

One thing I want you to remember while listening to my music is….everything I write about is real. It’s always going to be authentic, genuine, and close to my heart.

Something odd I want my fans to know about me is….when I was in elementary school and the teacher would hand us a worksheet to do, I had to scratch the piece of paper a couple times until it was soft.

My last meal would be….chipotle (is my life)!!!

I’m absolutely terrified of….the boogeyman. When I was a little kid I watched that movie Don’t Look Under the Bed and I’ve been scarred ever since.

In the next six months you should expect….a new EP and a revamped live show!
