The Half Earth is a Sheffield-based project started by vocalist, guitarist, and producer Conor Stephenson. The Half Earth recently welcomed new member Ben Walter, released an EP, and joined Lucy Rose on a tour. The EP, Light Breaks In, consists of 3 tracks and was released in early March. I recently sent over some fill in the blanks to learn more about Conor Stephenson and his project. Be sure to check out his new single “Borders” and the video for “End” below.
Three words I’d use to describe myself are….Extroverted. Introverted. Orange.
The story/meaning behind the name The Half Earth is….I was, and am now even more so, a fan of Kate Bush. I used to listen to her song ‘Hello Earth’ as a teenager, looking at the moon from my bedroom window. The first lines of the song are:
‘Hello Earth, Hello Earth. With just one hand held up high. I can blot you out, out of sight. Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo little Earth.’
I used to imagine myself sat on the moon, looking back at the Earth. I’d always wonder if you’d see The Half Earth the same way we see The Half Moon from down here. But it also has to do with being a half of a whole. It’s a bit of a cliché. But clichés can be useful.
I find inspiration from….I always feel most inspired after I’ve been playing live. Being active, playing shows and being in the studio fires me up. It makes me want to progress so I can build on what I’ve got already.
For fun I like to….Talk to people. None stop. For hours on end.
My favorite songs of all time include….
- “Nude” Radiohead
- “Hello Earth” Kate Bush
- “Head Over Heals” Tears For Fears (an only slightly guilty pleasure of mine)
I’m currently listening to….
- In Your Prime EP Josef Salvat
- Sleeping Tapes Jeff Bridges (useful for getting those all important early nights)
The first song I wrote was….A song about time with my cousin, and now manager, Will Morris.
Light Breaks In was recorded in….London, with a producer called Rich Cooper who also produced the Josef Salvat EP I mentioned earlier.
One thing I want you to remember while listening to my music is….That there’s always something positive to be taken from a negative emotion. That sadness can be turned into a positive feeling if you let yourself explore and understand it.
Something odd I want my fans to know about me is….I have a phobia of baked beans.
My last meal would be….A fried veggie breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. See I told you clichés could be useful.
I’m absolutely terrified of….Again, I reiterate, baked beans scare the hell out of me. They’d obviously be omitted from my last breakfast.
In the next six months you should expect….Bigger, faster, more hard-hitting music, bigger, faster, more hard-hitting shows, and lots more instagram pictures of things I find beautiful.
