Interview – Imagine The Silence

The following fill in the blanks come from Minneapolis-based metalcore band, Imagine The Silence. This quintet consists of members Julien Streeby (vocals), Nick Mavencamp (guitar), Devin Nelson (guitar), Joshua Barse (bass), and Eric Moen (drums). The band’s lineup was completed in 2014 and they released their debut record earlier this year. Aude Distare, a several year effort, is both complex and seasoned. Learn more about Imagine The Silence and the making of their debut full length from their answers. Don’t forget to check out the lyric video for “Are We Gonna Ouija or What?” and the rest of Aude Distare below.

Three words we’d use to describe us are….Not too shabby

The story/meaning behind our name Imagine The Silence is….We chose the name because we could not imagine a world without music; it is the thing in our lives that all five of us are the most passionate about, and our lives would be a lot different if it didn’t exist.

We met each other….Julien found Eric through a mutual friend; from there we found Nick on Craigslist (surprisingly), and found Josh and Devin from other bands in the scene. We knew we meshed well pretty much the first time we were in a room together with instruments.

The pickiest eater is….It might be Eric – it’s kind of hard to say; to be honest, we all could probably be put on a TV show like Bizarre Foods or Fear Factor and be fine.

The most OCD member is….Julien for sure. We’d say more about it, but he’d probably want to fix whatever we say and make it “perfect.”

For fun we like to….Seek out really spicy food, play video games together, play darts, watch and discuss pro-wrestling, and (of course) play, listen, write, and talk about music.

We’re currently listening to….Julien is jamming a lot of Twenty One Pilots, and recently got back on a Scary Kids Scaring Kids kick. Nick has been listening to a lot of Ice Nine Kills and Nickelback. Devin has been bumping Atmosphere, In Heart’s Wake and Parkway Drive. Josh has been listening to Ryan Adams, Dr. Dre, and La Dispute. Eric has been loving the sound of his own voice lately, as well as Trivium.

Our favorite 90s jams include….The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 Soundtrack, The Space Jam Soundtrack, The Wayne’s World Soundtrack, and the Friends theme song.

Our favorite tracks to play live include….Julien and Josh love playing “A Sound Escape” because of the meaning behind the lyrics and because it’s a song that’s easy to “get lost” in. Nick’s favorite to play live is Enslaved, because he finds it the most fun to play on guitar, and he likes the harmonies. Devin’s is “Success by Failure”. He finds it to be energizing, and loves the chorus melody and lyrics. Eric’s is “Complexions” because of the aggression that is unleashed when we play it.

The first song we wrote together was….”Complexions” was the first song that we started together!

Aude Distare was recorded in….Living rooms, basements, bedrooms, and (for one session) a studio. We recorded it wherever and whenever we possibly could.

One thing we want you to remember while listening to our music is….That we have lived every one of those songs, and if you ever find yourself in a difficult situation, there are ways to deal with it. As cliché as it is to say, just remember that life always gets better.

Something odd we want our fans to know about us is….Julien and Devin are in an intense Monopoly war. There is a lot of shouting and swearing that happens, and they are obsessed to the point that they play against each other on Xbox. Both of them get pretty defensive when it gets mentioned in any way.

We’re absolutely terrified of….Geese and becoming pregnant.

Our last meals would be….

  • Julien – Cheese Fondue
  • Nick – Mushroom stuffed Mushrooms with Mushroom sauce
  • Devin – Dad’s breakfast potatoes
  • Josh – French Onion soup and a Reuben
  • Eric – Banana’s dipped in Peanut Butter. He calls it his Nuts and ‘Nanners

In the next six months you should expect….We have a huge show coming up with We Came As Romans, All That Remains and Like Moths To Flames as well as a new music video at the end of October, more shows, and more exciting plans in the works. It’s going to be a great year for Imagine the Silence!
